Donation Day

Nice — so, there is going to be an event for getting rid of all that junk we’ve all acquired over the last 8 months.

Donation Day is this Sunday (May 18th) from 12-5 on Erickson Field.  It’s sponsored by the Food Bank I’m pretty sure.  Bring out non-perishable foods, clothes, books, CDs and anything else you aren’t going to use but may be of use to someone else.

There should be some free food, and by donating at least one item you’re allowed to go through the donations of others and see if there’s anything you can use yourself.

Also, if you’ve got big stuff that you don’t feel like taking out to Erickson Field, email your CD.  I have a feeling all the dorms have specific times when a truck will be parked outside to collect donations, which your CD will know about.

  1. Does anyone know if we’re allowed to take anything (I’m guessing not the food)?
Is this like last year’s event, where you could drop off and pick off, or is this strictly donations?

  2. I received an email about donation day I thought I’d pass on. It explains some details.

Please help a local woman who needs your assistance!

    Good evening!

Some of you may have heard about a pretty tragic story that had happened this past Sunday, May 11th, Mother’s Day. A young woman’s husband went
to their local gas station on Route 40 (just outside of Catonsville) while she was at home in the early stages of labor to fill up the gas tank before heading to the hospital. He was apparently stabbed at the gas station in a botched robbery. His wife, Ms. Sales, ended up having to be taken to the hospital to deliver their son (successful delivery - a healthy boy named Carlos at 6 lbs. 4 oz.) when concurrently her husband was taken to Shock Trauma where he was pronounced dead. Apparently Congressman Elijah Cummings came upon the scene right afterwards when he pulled up to get gas. Yesterday’s story can be found at

    http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/local/baltimore_county/bal-md.co.stabbing13may13,0,5017901.story

After celebrating a wonderful first “Mother’s Day” with my husband Rob, 10-month-old daughter Penney, and our dog Strummer, I can’t imagine what life would be like w/o Rob, esp. considering what a HUGE help he was the day of Penney’s birth.

I emailed one of the reporters at The Baltimore Sun that covered the story, Lynn Anderson, who gave me more information to make a donation and then spoke with the staff at Ms. Sales’ workplace facilitating this process.

I would like to lead a “coordinated effort” on behalf of UMBC to give a more substantial donation, which could consist of a money donation, supplemented with other things (diapers for instance, clothing, etc.). I am in the process of reaching out to others on campus to help spread the word. Many have quickly responded, such as Mikhel Kushner with The Women’s Center, who is donating a substantial amount of formula.

This Sunday, Residential Life is leading “Donation Day” 12-5 pm near Erickson Fielf for students to make donations to Goodwill. The huge truck will be parked where the Shriver Vans normally are. They will also be collecting items for the Santay-Sales family such as:

    * Newborn and “Stage/Size 1″ diapers
    * 3-6 months clothing for a boy (in my experience, most want to buy newborn stuff b/c it’s cuter, but they grow out of it fast)
    * 0-3 and 3-6 month plain white onesies (can buy both short and long-sleeved)
    * Basic diaper wipes

For Sunday’s event, cash/checks/gift cards(Babies ‘R Us or Target) cannot be collected on Sunday, but can be dropped off to me at The Shriver Center, 1st floor of the Public Policy Building.

Most important is that Ms. Sales and her son Carlos receive support, whether it is through UMBC or individually. If you would like to make a contribution on your own, you can send a donation to:

    The Santay-Sales Family Fund
    c/o the La Quinta Inn
    7300 Crestmount
    Road, Jessup, MD 20794
    410-799-1500

I understand that you can also go to a Bank of America and mention the
Santay-Sales Family Fund. Ms. Sales’ colleague Bridget was very open to giving out account information that the workplace established (routing and account) and said I could, too, as it is “deposit only.” I’m really hesitant to do so publicly, but am happy to individually.

I plan to personally deliver donations to the La Quinta Inn on Wednesday, May 21st in the morning. My goal is to fill not one, but maybe TWO Shriver Vans with items! So feel free to forward this on to others, especially through your different networks on campus!

The UMBC community is truly an amazing one filled with compassionate and giving individuals. I continue to be impressed with this every day through students doing service and fantastic colleagues who really do care!

    Thanks!

“by donating at least one item you’re allowed to go through the donations of others and see if there’s anything you can use yourself.”
    hope that helps

  4. Oh, wow. Can’t believe I missed that. Thanks for pointing it out.

  5. Do you know if there is anywhere I can check to see what I am allowed to donate, foodwise? I had an old roommate who bought POUNDS of protein powder and then decided he didn’t want to gain wait that bad afterall. He’s since left and I have so much protein powder which someone who is actually hungry might want. But the package has been opened, so I don’t know if it can be accepted. Any help? Anyone?

  6. @b

I don’t know if it’ll be accepted but my roomate told me he wants it.

    email him at josking1@umbc.edu

  7. @ b

I’ll take that protein powder too

    my email is jpeak1@umbc.edu

  8. This was an excellent idea.

  9. haha joe and reece, you do not need to put on weight you are perfectly fine i promise. i guess it’s your call though.

    re: donation day-

i stopped by today and it was great! there were lots of items being dropped off and swapped for (i personally trashed my room looking for things to donate so i could grab this awesome screenprint, which i later found out wasn’t student work, but an urban outfitters item :/) and enjoyed a free snow cone… or two. there was also free cotton candy, popcorn, and tons of pizza.

it sucked that the rain hindered what would have been an awesome event and a lot of general outdoor fun on our last weekend of the semester, but RSA did an awesome job of making the best of the situation, and i think they were very successful!

  10. @Reece

sorry, I already gave it to Tal’s roommate! maybe you can sneak some from him?

  11. Just a thought:

I didn’t make it in time to go to or donate towards Donation Day :( and that is partly because I don’t live on campus and don’t always come to UMBC on the weekends. Perhaps this is mainly an event just for residents on campus but perhaps it would be an awesome change if ResLife could plan it so that it happens on a weekday instead so that commuters have a better chance to going too?

  12. I was planning on going (it definitely would have been helpful to), but at the time I was frantically trying to send things home so I could make a 2.5-hour trip come Wednesday without leaving things behind that won’t fit in my small car. No fault of the donation day planners, but if it could last a little longer next year or be spread out over a couple of days that would be great. Maybe even have somewhere like the Harbor Multipurpose Room set up as a “permanent” donation area during exam week? These suggestions might not be possible but if they are they would be very helpful.
