Hey all,
I got to thinking the other day (Not always the best idea but I figured I may as well give it a shot). I know most everyone is looking forward to getting some time off for the holidays , but I wanted to throw out the idea of winter basketball games for those of us who will be on campus during Winter semester and/or live within a reasonable distance of campus. It’s easy to get the word out and get people hyped about supporting the basketball games during the fall and spring semesters when everyone is around and frequenting campus. Obviously winter home games will have less of an audience, but I thought it would be cool if people were willing to stick around or drive up to campus to help support our teams.
Men’s Home Games:
- Saturday December 20 vs. American University 7:05 pm
- Saturday January 3 vs. Stony Brook University 7:05 pm
- Saturday January 10 vs. University of Maine 7:05 pm
- Saturday January 17 vs. University of Hartford 7:05 pm
Women’s Home Games:
- Sunday December 21 vs. Loyola College 2:00 pm
- Saturday January 10 vs. University of New Hampshire 4:30 pm
- Saturday January 17 vs. University of Maine 4:30 pm
- Wednesday January 21 vs. Albany University 12:00 pm
- Saturday January 24 vs. Binghamton University 7:00 pm
First Home Game of Spring Semester:
- Men: Wednesday January 28 vs. Binghamton University 7:05 pm
- Women: Wednesday February 11 vs. University of Vermont 7:00 pm (NCAA pack the house challenge!)
Come out and cheer your Retrievers on to victory this Winter!!!
Is it me or did that break go by really, really fast? It’s Sunday as I type this and yet it feels like Thanksgiving hasn’t even happened yet. Either way, turkey day has come and gone and now the countdown is down to a mere 7 full days of class and finals are right around the corner. This is the final week of on-campus events, so If procrastination is your thing and you’re looking for something to do this week, check some of these out:
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday are the final Gameroom mini-tournaments of the week with 8 and 9 Ball Pool on Mon, Board and Card Games on Tues, and Video Games on Wed. If you’re still looking to settle some bets with friends or you just want to showoff some ping pong skills, this is your last chance to do so this semester at one of these mini-tournaments! And if you’re psyched about the new Harry Potter movie this summer, get in on the action early with Harry Potter Trivia on Tuesday at 8PM in the Sports Zone.
If you still haven’t been to a trivia night this is your last chance to have some fun in the pub this semester. Wednesday is the final pub trivia night in Flat Tuesdays at 7PM and that means the winners of the semester-long competition will be announced! Remember, upstairs is 21+ but downstairs is open to everyone! Also on Wednesday is a basketball doubleheader in the RAC starting at 4:30PM with the women’s team taking on NAVY followed by the men’s team taking on Towson at 7PM. Both of these games are going to be broadcast on MASN, so show up early and catch both of these big games!
The semester’s going to go out with a bang with a ton of great events, so keep an eye out for my last events post of the semester full of weekend events. And try not to lose your mind before finals.
Looks like Jay Greene had a hell of a weekend where we beat Quinnipac, and tournament host, Columbia to capture the Tyler Ugolyn Classic crown.
We weren’t at the games but check out these sites coverage of the game here, here, & here.
Next game is Wednesday night 7:30 at George Washington. Should be glorious.
Read all about the UMBC victory over Stevenson here and here (shout-outs to both umbcbballrallymonkey blog and to the retriever weekly blog).
We had a great time at the game and its nice to start the season by destroying an opponent. If this margin of victory continues (unlikely, but still) we’ll be laughing all the way to a repeat.
Just got to say that our new favorite player is Freshman starting sensation Chauncey Gilliam. He was awesome and scored 17 points in his first outing at UMBC.

Also noted:
Today UMBC beat Hartford in our last home volleyball game of the season. The lady-dawgs will be playing at Albany this coming Friday and (hopefully) Saturday coming home with an America East championship. Good game!
So we have a brand new Chesapeake Bay Retriever Puppy as our dog. Now the question of what to name it. There is an article on the Athletic Department website (http://www.umbcretrievers.com/sports/news/release.asp?RELEASE_ID=4322) and the poll is on your left if you scroll down a little. The choices are Champ, Gritty, Grit, (other suggestions - email Kelly Fahey kfahey1@umbc.edu), and Believe in order of popularity on the poll.
I think it is rather obvious that the dog should be named True Grit seeing as it is our mascot. At least True Grit should be on the poll. We should start an email campaign to ensure that our mascot is actually named what our mascot is named. What does everyone else think?
Note From The Editor: If you have a name that you would like to see added (not making any promises though) please post them in a comment below.
Its the final home game of the Rugby Season; the BBQ Bash.
Saturday at 1pm.
UMBC plays College Park on Walker Field.
Kick-off is at 1pm.
Come for some Rugby and Some BBQ. It’ll be delicious, nutritious and deadly.
Rugby can be deadly.
So Come Watch.
It feels wrong to post this given the revenge match vs Georgetown on Saturday, but Men’s Soccer plays Loyola here on Saturday at 1pm and our sources tell us that Loyola is planning to outfan the UMBC cheering section.
They plan to bring a contingent of fans to UMBC’s soccer stadium to create an artificial home field advantage by overpowering UMBC’s fan base.
Will we be outfanned?!
I hope not.
Get everyone you know to show up (assuming the game isn’t rain cancelled) and if you don’t, at least go to the Rugby Game 1pm Walker Field.
Men’s Rugby will be playing Carol Community College on Saturday at 1pm on Walker Field.
For those who haven’t been to a Rugby game. They’re a lot of fun, a cookout should happen along with the game. Hopefully it isn’t rained out.
Lets go out and support them.
I was watching the Olympics this summer and realized that there are few sports awesomer (yes. awesomer) than volleyball. Its an underappreciated sport and it turns out we have a good team.
The season started away from home and UMBC’s record is already 3 and 1. We’ve beaten Appalachian State, Eastern Michigan, & Howard University.
The home debut is tomorrow (9.5.08) at 10:00am. If you can’t make that game. There’s another game at 5:00pm
Before the 5:00pm game people get together at Flat Tuesday’s at 4pm when it opens and to then head to the game (at the RAC).
Hopefully, by the end of the Volleyball season, we can get attendance like we have at Men’s Basketball games.
How awesome would that be?
The answer is clearly awesomer.

Reminder:
Don’t forget about the Jazz Night Hosted by UMBC Rugby on Thursday 10th April.
It was a success last year and includes a great Jazz Band (Tom Lagana) and
food for $15 (tickets from the Commons Front Desk). Can you whack this up
as well?
UMBC RUGBY BATTLES TO THIRD PLACE IN GORGE CUP
BY EDWARD HODSON
TWO WINS FOR UMBC RUGBY WAS ENOUGH TO ENSURE THIRD PLACE IN THE 2008 GORGE CUP AT LAUREL, COLUMBIA.
After confidently easing past John’s Hopkins in the first match, stern resistance from Salisbury in the second meant UMBC had to settle for 3rd place following a gutsy win over Frostburg in warm conditions at Rocky Gorge RFC. The victory ensured UMBC ended the competition on a high, and Head Coach Rusty Cross’ team maintaining a strong 7-2-1 record in all competitions in 2008.
