It’s Over!
September that is! Fall appears to have arrived for good and all of this rain has made the end of summer feel more like the beginning of spring. Let me take a guess, all of this rain has just given you an excuse to stay inside your dorm, play video games and watch DVDs? Am I right? If I am (and even if I’m not) then I’ve got the perfect thing to cure your rainy day blues: a week of great events!
Do you need a break from all of those movies played in LH1? Do you wish that you could sit in a regular chair for once while you enjoy your flicks on the big screen? Then come to the Skylight Room on Monday the 29th at 8PM for SEB’s Cinema Series featuring The Motorcycle Diaries. I heard nothing but good things about this movie and I’m sure being able to watch it in a comfortable armchair will make it even better!
UMBC, I know you’re into the Internet, blogs, and books (who isn’t these days?), and I also happen to know that you’re into secrets, rumors and gossip (I won’t tell you who told me, but I think they sit behind you during you’re MW history class). So why not combine all of those activities together in a big interactive multimedia project? Well one man has done just that and the results have been amazingly powerful and creative. I first stumbled across a Post Secret book a few years ago and found myself captivated by the raw honesty, emotion and oftentimes humor expressed on each postcard. So when I found out the creator and editor of these books and the related blog Frank Warren was coming to speak at UMBC, I was more than ecstatic. If you have no idea what I’m talking about then please visit: http://postsecret.blogspot.com/ and browse through some of the submitted cards. It’s like eating potato chips or watching some weird viral video: you just can’t stop looking. If you find yourself as interested in this anonymous, secret-exposing art-form then come to the UC Ballroom at 8PM on Tuesday the 30th to hear Frank himself speak about his project and sign books afterwards. This event is absolutely free, so don’t waste a great opportunity to meet the creator of Post Secret!
I’ll be honest with you guys: I’m a big procrastinator. Even as I write this, I’m sitting at my desk, slouched over my laptop in a dark room lit only by a small desk lamp, using this article as an excuse to not write the 10-page paper I have due on Monday. Now you may be wondering where I’m going with this little rant, but I do have a point: don’t pass up something you can do today, assuming you can just do it the next time! Wednesday the 1st of October is Pub Trivia Night in Flat Tuesdays (21+ upstairs, 18+ downstairs) and if you’ve been putting it off for the past month, then do yourself a favor, gather some friends and start competing! There are not only weekly prizes, but also an end of semester grand prize! I checked the scoreboard just yesterday and the scores look a little lopsided, but the semester is not over yet and your team could still walk home with the grand prize!
The Women’s Soccer team has had a rough season so far, but I’m sure with a little help from you guys we can cheer them on to a conference victory this Thursday October 2nd at 3:30PM in the Soccer Stadium! On that note, the entire fall sports season is almost halfway finished, so if you haven’t made it to a soccer game, volleyball match or any other sports event, keep an eye out here on UU or head to www.umbcretrievers.com for a full sports schedule!
Also on Thursday, the SEB Weekly Movie Series continues with 3 showings of Wanted. The first show will be on Thursday the 2nd at 10PM in LH1, the second will be on Friday the 3rd at 8PM in LH1 and the final showing will be on the Sunday the 4th at 8PM in the Sports Zone. As always the admission cost is $2 and Sunday’s show in the Sports Zone is free!
Saturday and Sunday are Half-Price play days all day and Monday the 29th and Wednesday the 1st are Table Tennis and Board/Card game tournaments, respectively.
And finally, remember UMBC, homecoming is just a few weeks away, so start making your plans now and keep checking UU for more weekly events updates and special updates on homecoming activities!
