New UMBC Mascot Logo

By Daedalus on Dec 6th, 2009 at 6:26 PM

Sure, we’re a bit late to this, but if you didn’t know, there’s a vote on myUMBC (unfortunately only through midnight tonight), choosing between these three options (some are disappointed about an obvious omission from the vote)

What do you think about these designs?

Personally, I don’t like any of them… they all look the same! Compared to the other area logos, they look cartoonish and not the intense look that everyone else has. How did these three get chosen?

Of the three, I like 1 the most.

    1 > 3 > 2

How about we just become the Wolves instead?

I would love to know how much money is being wasted on this and how much it will cost to implement these changes.

@Diablo that’s a pretty valid concern. I’ll see what I can dig up.

@Sparky Don’t forget how much money they’ll make with the rush to buy merchandise with the new logo on it. That’s one motivation for sports franchises to revise their logos, the surge in revenue from fan gear sales.

It would seem to me that this task should have been dispensed to the visual arts department…

I’m just a bit concerned that it’ll make us look like the golden retrievers and not the Chesapeake bay retrievers. I do like the first one though!

@The Individual: agreed. I don’t prefer any of the options. Option 1 is the best if I had to pick. Option 3 looks like he’s constipated, and I doubt that’s the feeling we’re going for. In all honesty why would you pay someone else to make the logo when you have students who are paying you that could just as easily make something that looked ten times better?

It looks like we’re trying too hard to be tough with options 2 & 3. If I have to choose, I choose option 1 too, because he looks more proud than anything. But, I feel like better options could have been designed.

I like the first one better because of the seriousness it portrays. The other two look cartoonish. What about the UMBC CROWS?

Whyyy does everyone like the 1st option??? To me, all I can tell is that the dog has a popped collar and the eyes look weird.

I vote for the second one, dogs are supposed to be tough! I think there is more that could be done to it. How about a crest in the background to contain the UMBC and the dog? Also, are we ditching the text that goes below that says “Retrievers”? I hope not..

I like the logo we have now and don’t see the necessity to change.

    @senior student

I think because we aren’t a very aggressive school where sports are concerned (not that we aren’t into sports… we just all don’t go ridiculous crazy for them…) and option 1 is the only one that doesn’t look like it could go after you.

Personally, I’d like to see an adorable retriever but that’s just me >_>

Thinking about Testudo, on a lot of CP’s stuff they have a cartoon version of the mascot costume. I think Tru Grit’s costume face would make a pretty good logo–our mascot is not JUST an animal, it’s a character.

Apparently trends in mascot design are changing, and, you know, we have to be trendy.

I find it somehow humoring whenever announcements are made about it (like on myUMBC) like hurray you chose *drumroll* OPTION 1!

    Option 1? hmmm.

Sadly now we look like we are the golden retrievers… :(
