Third Eye Blind to Play at Quadmania 2010

By Sparky on Mar 4th, 2010

I have just stumbled across a facebook event advertising Third Eye Blind as part of SEB’s Quadmania this April 16-18. Tickets are $10 with a UMBC ID and go on sale at the Commons info desk Wednesday March 10 at 12pm. The show will be in the RAC and there appears to be no ticket limit listed on the facebook event.

This seems like it has potential. Personally I feel like this is an act that could appeal to a wide variety of students. Obviously you can never please everyone, but I’m going to go ahead and give SEB some major props for securing Third Eye Blind to come play.

This is (or should be) the link to the facebook event.

So what are everyone’s thoughts on Third Eye Blind?

Late Night Fire Alarms in Erickson

By Sparky on May 16th, 2009

Around 2:30 this morning (Friday into Saturday) I was hanging out at a friend’s place when I  was informed that the fire alarms were going off in Erickson and that there were sirens and police abounding. I was curious, and one of my friends visiting from Erickson was concerned, so we went over to check it out. I saw one fire engine, and two police cars, one of which pulled up right as I was getting there.

I went to talk to some of the Erickson residents who were awakened/disturbed by the late/early hour of the fire alarms, and spoke with 5 residents from the first, second, and third floors, including an R.A. Three had been asleep, one had just returned from off campus, and one was just on his way to bed when the fire alarm went off. None of them had seen or heard or smelled anything that would have indicated why the fire alarm had gone off at about 2:25 AM. One resident suggested the idea of faulty wiring in the alarms somewhere.

Most of the residents looked rather displeased and half asleep while they were waiting to be let back into the dorm. Police and other safety personnel inspected the building, and residents were let back into their rooms at 3:02AM. I managed to get a few pictures on my cell phone camera, but nothing terribly interesting or good quality.

Please comment with any more information you may have and I’ll update if something big develops.

The Spirit will be showing again at 8 p.m. in lecture hall 1. Want something more upbeat? Just like every other Friday, there will be Live Music at 9 in Flat Tuesdays. If none of these events sound appealing to you then head stop by to enjoy some Bingo and Breakfast at 9 in the gameroom.

If you’re up early on Saturday morning head over to the Sports Zone and enjoy some Saturday morning cartoons with your friends. If the weather is nice make sure to take part in PSA’s Spring Soccer Tournament. It will start at 11 on Walker Field and each team can consist of between five to seven players. There will be a total of 3 rounds, with the winning team rewarded with a gift card. To register contact Reza at ap3@umbc.edu

Upcoming Weekend Events!

By WhatUp on Apr 1st, 2009

Yay! Spring is finally here. Although we may suffer some April showers, just remember, they bring May flowers! As for this weekend, the MFA Imaging and Digital Arts These Exhibition opening reception will take place between 5 and 7 pm in the Fine Arts Building. The event is free and the exhibition will be available through April 24th. Later on at 10 pm the very popular movie, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, will be showing for free in Lecture Hall 1.

On Friday the UMBC Mama’s Boys Acapocalypse will take place from 7 to 9 in Lecture hall 5. Make sure to stop by and watch the boys sing their hearts out! Afterward, you have various options as to what you can do; there will be live music at 9 pm in Flat Tuesdays or Apples to Apples & Apples at 9 pm in the Gameroom. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button will be playing again in Lecture Hall 1 for free, except it will be at 8 pm this time.

Saturday brings a couple sports events you should definitely attend. Women’s Lacrosse will play New Hampshire at 12 pm and Men’s Lacrosse will play Binghamton at 7:30. Later on, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button will be showing once again at 8 pm in Lecture Hall 1. Already seen it? There will be a very exciting Karaoke night in Flat Tuesdays at 8 pm. It should be a fun time!

Sunday is a day of rest. For this reason, this Sunday you should do absolutely nothing. Chances are, you’ll be recovering from your super fun weekend or the terrible exams you had to study for all week. Either way, just chill out…I hear it’s good for you.

Addition: Hey guys, There is also the Musical Theatre Club’s performance of Pippin this weekend. Shows are Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 8pm in the Sports Zone. It’s free for all UMBC students with their red card, and $5 for everyone else. Tickets can be purchased at the Commons Info. Desk (students still need a ticket even though it’s free). Thanks! Upcoming Weekend Events

By WhatUp on Mar 11th, 2009

Okay, so I realize Spring Break starts next week and you’re all going to want to rush home as soon as your last class of the week is over. But why hurry? There are still plenty of things to do on campus this weekend!

On Thursday, the bi-weekly Open Mic Night will take place. It will be coffeehouse style at 8 pm in the Sports Zone.

Friday, aside from the fact that SEB and SGA applications are due, there will be a couple sports games. Men’s Tennis will play Duquesnse at 2 pm. Women’s Lacrosse will then be playing Old Dominion at 4 pm. Earlier in the day, commuter connection will be presenting women taking the lead to save our planet from 12 to 1 pm in lower Flat Tuesdays.

Because SEB doesn’t have anything scheduled for this Saturday and Sunday, those of you who are still on campus will have plenty of opportunities to attend sports games! Most importantly, on Saturday at 11 am our Basketball team will be playing Binghamton in the American East Championships. SGA has funded a free fan bus so no UMBC student will have to worry about getting a ride there. Tickets are $10 at the Commons front desk. Just sign up for the fan bus when you get your ticket and show up at the RAC before 5 am on Saturday to have the opportunity to go the game and support your school! If you choose not to go to the basketball game, our softball team will play Hampton at 12:30, then at 2:30 they will play again against  Marist. After that, at 3:30 our baseball team will play Ohio State.

On Sunday, our Softball team will once again play Marist, this time at 12:30 and Hampton at 2:30. Baseball will play Pittsburgh at 4:00 pm. So try and stop by either go and support your fellow retrievers before heading home!

HOPE YOU ALL HAVE A FANTASTIC SPRING BREAK!

Upcoming Weekend Events

By WhatUp on Mar 4th, 2009

This week has brought some very fun Art Week events so far! Although most of these events have come and gone, we still have a lot more to look forward to this weekend on campus. If you happen to finish with classes early on Thursday then be sure to stop by softball game against Drexel at 3 p.m. and support your fellow retrievers. On Thursday night SEB will be showing 7 Pounds at 10 p.m. in Lecture Hall 1.

If you were one of the many people upset about missing the Screenprinting demonstration this Monday due to the school closure, don’t worry because it has been reschedule for 12 p.m. until 1 p.m. this Friday in the Commons Mainstreet. Ever played Mafia? If not, then you should definitely hit up the gameroom at 9 p.m. on Friday and join the fun. If you have, then you already know how fun it is so you’ll most likely be there anyway. If you’d rather be less interactive, then Live Music at 9 p.m. in Flat Tuesdays would be perfect for you! Those who missed the SEB movie on Thursday night will have the
opportunity to see 7 Pounds again Friday night at 8 p.m. in Lecture Hall 1.

The ever-so-popular Battle of the Bands will take place this Saturday at 6 PM in the UC Ballroom. Come root for your favorite band to perform at Quadmania. Afterwards, you’ll have another opportunity to see 7 Pounds in Lecture Hall 1 at 8 p.m.

If you aren’t too busy studying for midterms on Sunday, then check out the softball game verse Seton Hall at 11:00 a.m. or the Baseball game verse Yale at 4 p.m. Until next week…Enjoy your weekend!

Upcoming Weekend Events

By WhatUp on Feb 26th, 2009

This weekend brings some more exciting and free events on campus for all students to enjoy. If you are one of many students who don’t have class on Fridays, you may be interested in a couple events going on Thursday. Between 8:30 AM and 8:30 PM, there will be a Blood drive on the Commons Mainstreet. If you haven’t done so already, feel free to sign up the day of. After all, you can help save a life and also enjoy free drinks and snacks. As for Thursday night, SEB will be showing 007 Quantum of Solace at 10 PM in Lecture Hall 1.

Friday night our more picky students will have more fun options to choose from. For one, you can stop by Flat Tuesday and enjoy Live music at 9 PM. If Flat Tuesdays isn’t exactly your scene, then you can head over to the game room to munch on brownies while you play boardgames. Whether you missed the weekly movie Thursday night or would just love to see it again, 007 Quantum of Solace will be showing in Lecture hall one, but this time at 8 PM. Friday is also the deadline for your artweek submissions so don’t forget to turn in your art work!

Saturday during the day there will be various sports events. Men’s Lacrosse will play Colgate at 1 PM and Softball will have two games, one at 10 AM against Iona, and another at 12 PM against Central Connecticut. Saturday at 8 PM is Amateur Comedy Night, perfect for those of you who think your funny, or are in fact funny.  Anybody will have the opportunity to impress the crowd with their jokes so stop by Flat Tuesdays to crack us up. And if you’re lame and don’t enjoy laughing then go to see 007 Quantum of Solace in the Sports Zone at 8 PM.

As for Sunday, you shouldn’t be worried about events because you should be studying. But if you feel like showing off your school spirit, then definitely go to the Men’s Basketball game against Albany at 2:05. Have a fantastic weekend!

We Made It!

By WhatUp on Dec 7th, 2008

Congrats everyone, another semester in the bag! All we have to get through now is finals week, but we all know thats no big deal (insert sarcasm.) I don’t know about all of you guys, but it’s been one hell of a semester for me. 22 credits, internships and jobs all took their toll over the past few months and I don’t think I have ever been so busy in my life. I’m going to be straight and to the pont for this, my last events post of the year, so here’s a rundown of what’s goin on this weekend and early next week:

The last Every Freakin Friday of the year will be the 5th and feature live music in Flat Tuesday at 9PM and Dress-Up Clue also at 9PM in the Gameroom. What I consider to be the highlight of the weekend is the Harry Potter Yule Ball and Dance Party at 9PM on Saturday the 6th in lower Flat Tuesdays. If you didn’t happen to see some of the fancy invitations (see here) with all of the details, there will be a string quartet as well as dessert plus decorations and the promise of a great time to be had. This is also SEB’s final event of the semester, so come show your support and end the year with some fun!

Saturday and Sunday are half-price play days in the Gameroom, so you can get all of your pre-finals gaming on all day, either day PLUS there will be a final Table Tennis Mini Tournament from 6-10PM on Monday the 8th from 6-10PM.

There are also a couple of women’s basketball games coming up, first against Towson on Saturday the 6th at 7PM in the RAC and then against Coppin State on Monday the 8th also at 7PM in the RAC. The next women’s home game after that is on the 21st, so make you check these while you can! There are also some good men’s bball games coming up, you can check the schedule here.

Coming up next week is Midnight Breakfast and the Stress Free Zone, but I’ll post up a comment with more details about that later (or someone else can!)

I hope some or all of you got some good event info from my articles this semester and I’ll see you next semester!

School Countdown: 12 Full Days Left

By WhatUp on Nov 21st, 2008

Winter sports are picking up and the semester is winding down (faster and faster each week it seems) and the countdown is now down to a mere 12 full days of regular semester school! I myself am pumped about Thanksgiving (both the break and the holiday) but at the same time I’m not looking forward to counting the days left until all of my final projects/papers are due. The end of the semester is always the perfect time to establish some good time management and this fall is no exclusion. I recommend setting up a calendar with all of your due dates marked so you know well in advance how much time you have to work on each paper/project/test/whatever, but also mark down some of these events (or all of them) so you know that books and computers aren’t the only things that exist in the world. It’s good to get out, take breaks (blah blah blah I know I’ve been saying that all semester) and just set school aside sometimes. Your notes and programs will all be there when you get back, these events come and go just once a week!

Thursday the 20th at 8PM the UMBC Wind Ensemble will be having a performance in the FA Recital Hall with no admission cost to students. If you’ve never seen a UMBC music performance, this is a great chance for you to check out a great group perform and with no ticket price, there’s no excuse for not going. After the concert you can stop by LH1 at 10PM for the first of three weekend showings of Wall-E, the final SEB Weekly Movie. And in celebration of the upcoming holiday break all three showings will be 100% free of charge! I f you can’t make it Thursday night, it will play again Friday at 8PM in Lecture Hall 1 and one more time on Saturday at 8PM in the Sports Zone. The Dark Knight brought out a lot of people last week so make sure you arrive early to save good seats!

On Friday afternoon (the 21st) make sure to stop by Flat Tuesdays during free hour for the Commuter Connection Meet & Greet for Peace. Pizza will be provided for lunch as well! In the evening Every Freakin’ Friday continues with a live performance by the Annie Sidley Band at 9PM in lower Flat Tuesdays. Come see this R&B inspired DC native perform live in the intimate setting of the FT stage, so make sure to bring your friends. For more info visit: www.anniesidley.com.

It’s been a while since the trip to Georgetown, but SEB is bringing the bus trip back on Saturday the 22nd with an all day trip to New York City! Tickets are only $25 and are available at the Commons front desk from now until Friday. Don’t miss out on this final bus trip of the semester to the city that never sleeps! For more info visit umbc.edu/seb or stop by the SEB office if you have any questions. If you opt out of the trip and you’re still looking for something to do that night check out the Vocal Arts Ensemble performing a free show in the FA Recital Hall at 8PM.

Finally, Sunday is usually a burnout day for students. The last day before a new week and the last chance to catch up on all the rest you lost the week before. However this Sunday I suggest you break out of that routine and go out and do something. Not only can you play games in the Gameroom for half price on Sunday (and Saturday) you can catch another fine arts performance, this time the UMBC Symphony Orchestra, at 8PM in the FA Recital Hall. This performance (like all of the others this weekend) is absolutely free of charge plus you get to see all of the great UMBC music talent.

This will be my last events-related article before break, but afterward I’ll post up anything happening up until the end of the semester. SEB just recently planned their entire Spring 2009 events calendar so if you’re not graduating, definitely keep an eye out for the new events calendar and more UU posts on events. I hope you guys enjoy the weekend, the holiday and the time off and good luck to everyone on finals!

SAVE GAS! Do Stuff On Campus

By WhatUp on Nov 13th, 2008

So gas prices have fallen, but who’s to say how long they will stay down? My suggestion to you guys is pocket that 40 dollars and just stay on campus this weekend. You’ll meet new friends, have a good time with you current friends and you won’t have to put up with any traffic! Lucky enough for everyone, there’s plenty going on this weekend, so keep your keys in your pocket and check out some of this weekends events!

Thursday the 13th is a night of endless options. I wish the times were at least a little staggered so I could tell you to skip around events but the three big ones are all happening at 8PM. For all of you music lovers, Stuart Saunders Smith will be performing original compositions in the FA Recital Hall for a whopping admission price of free. If you want to see a more amateur-type act, then check out the Best Original Song competition at Open Mic Night in the Sports Zone. Having seen a bunch of Open Mics along with the Homecoming talent show I know for a fact there’s a lot of musical talent at UMBC, so don’t miss this opportunity to see them all perform live! Finally, the Senior Dance Concert will be held in FA Studio 317 (third floor of the Fine Arts building) for anyone interested in dance. The admission price for that show is $5 for students but will include performances from UMBC’s top-notch dancers. This is also the only event of the night that will continue through Friday and Saturday as well. All three of these events start at 8PM so whichever you choose, make sure you show up early to get good seats, and if you want to compete in the Open Mic, show up early for a good time slot!

After all of those events, The Dark Knight finally arrives at UMBC with the first showing in LH1 at 10PM. And the best part about is that all of the showings this weekend are absolutely free to all students, a full 100% off of your typical movie admission price. If you can’t catch it then, it will play again on Friday at 8PM in LH1 and one final time on Saturday in the Sports Zone. This movie won’t be out on DVD for a while so definitely make sure you catch at least one of these shows and see some crazy Joker antics.

The 14th is a Friday and that means Every Freakin Friday, this week featuring The Silver Lights performing live in lower Flat Tuesdays at 9PM. Also at 9, War Game Night will be going on up in the Gameroom (playing off of the Tropic Thunder theme…that is no longer the weekly movie…) if you feel the need to vent by way of table top game playing. Also, if you missed the Senior Dance Concert on Thursday, it will be happening again at the same time, same place (FA Studio 317, 8PM). If you can’t make it to any of those events, make sure to at least head to the RAC at 7PM to support the Women’s Volleyball team take on Stony Brook in one of the last regular season matches.

Continuing with a weekend full of events, Saturday the 15th is full of events, activities and sports. First, the UMBC Swimming and Diving Team will take on Towson at 1PM in the UMBC Natatorium (pool area.) After that, the UMBC Men’s Basketball team kicks off its season at 7:05PM in the RAC facing Stevenson! (see giant countdown ticker above) Make sure you show up early and get tickets so you don’t miss out on the first step towards another potential America East title! Finally, if basketball isn’t your thing, you can either catch the final performance of the Senior Dance Concert at 8PM in FA Studio 317 or you can come play bingo on Mainstreet also at 8PM. I don’t know about you guys, but bingo is the sh*t, however no matter what you feel like doing, you’ve got plenty of options, so put down the books for a minute and get out this weekend!

Last but not least, the Womens Volleyball team wraps up their regular season on Sunday the 16th at 2PM in the RAC against Hartford. It’s been somewhat of an up and down season for the lady retrievers, so go out and support them for their final regular season match.

I hope by reading these articles you guys are finding out about all of the things UMBC has to offer not only during the week but on the weekends too. I know we don’t have a great reputation for being a big weekend school, but I’m sure if you look hard enough you’ll be wanting to stay on campus each weekend. Who knows, maybe you’ll even find a club to get involved in. At least you’ll save some gas money.
